Sporthalle Hausburgviertel Berlin / DE

Where formerly cattle were stabled, these days the physical
education in the Berlin Hausburg primary school takes
place: The Berlin architects Chestnutt_Niess converted the
listed cattle hall on the old slaughterhouse premises in the
Prenzlauer Berg sector into a sports hall. The new hall
uses the layout and the alignment of the existing building,
only the last of the grids towards Otto-Ostrowski-Straße
remains free and becomes the entrance yard. On both
long sides of the old brick construction, new one-storey
buildings of exposed concrete have been added as functional
wings – they house locker rooms, showers as well
as equipment rooms. The new roof in the shape of a centrally
supported filigree wood construction as well as the
louver façade of larch wood and glass discreetly stand out
from the existing building and produce an interesting play
of light inside the hall.
